Kick Over the Traces, a four-piece band from the midst of New Jersey, have put out a strong pop-punk/emo EP from cover to cover. The band chooses to start the album with a very good impression and opens with one of the standout tracks on the album, “A Fragile Moment”. The song displays very abstract lyrics such as, “Would you like me to paint a portrait/of all the words that were said when you and I stopped talking/Cause all I could paint/would be black stripes on a canvas”. If this band were to choose a single off “The Sleeping Voice” for radio/TV, this song would be it.

Track 3, “More Often Then Not”, is what seems to be a break up song. It shows the vocalist struggling with a problem and being faced with two decisions, one being to play dirty like the opposing side, or to walk away and be the better person in the situation. The lyric that caught my eye, and stands out throughout the song and album is “For in a week before February/I learned I can give my all/and wear consequence as a medal/but it’s not my fault if you don’t follow through”. This lyric sticks out in my mind as one of the best on the album simply because it picks up the track after it had some what seemed to take a mellow twist, and finishes the track extremely well. “Done Dreaming” comes on right where “More Often Then Not” and you struggle to notice the new track begin. It begins very fast pace and somewhat similar to how “More Often Then Not” ended.

“Passing Out To Pass The Time” fits well into the album because it seems to slow you down and let you catch your breath, as it is an acoustic song. The vocalist in this song sounds reminiscent memories of a cross between the vocalist in Sugarcult and Pete from Fall Out Boy. At the 2:30 mark in the song, the rest of the band jumps in, and your ears are drawn towards the wonderful combined noises of the piano and guitars. Standout lyrics to the song soon follow this as you are drawn to the singer’s voice again, “You’ve been kissing hard/I’ve been holding my breath/Your taste stays fresh on my lips”. “Everything But The Algebra” closes the album, and was a smart choice by Kick Over The Traces as it leaves you wanting more and anticipating a full length. Catch these guys playing a town near you

The only thing I found troublesome in this album, is that some of the lyrics do not seem to flow too well with the rhythm of the guitars, in some songs such as “Giving Up Your Last Breath” and “More Often Then Not”.

If you are a fan of Fall Out Boy, Tokyo Rose, Socratic and Spitalfield, this just might be your new favorite band.
